Google raised the prices for online storage when it transitioned to Drive a few years back, but now the prices are going the other way. On the official Google blog, the company announced that the monthly cost for Google Drive space is plummeting. The new prices place Google Drive far below the cost of competing services like Dropbox and OneDrive.
Google’s 100GB plan is now $1.99 per month, down from $4.99. The popular 1TB plan, which came free for two years with theChromebook Pixel, is now only $9.99 per month. That’s a big drop from the old $49.99 price tag, and makes the Pixel a much less appealing deal if you need a lot of cloud storage. Google’s top tier is 10TB for $99.99 per month, but it can be increased in 1TB increments for an extra $10 up to as much as 30TB. Everyone still gets 15GB for free too.
Before the price drop, Google Drive was close in price to the other cloud storage providers, but now it’s distinctly cheaper. For example, Dropbox charges $99.99 per year for 100GB of storage. Microsoft’s recently renamed OneDrive is also more expensive at $12.49 per month for 200GB. There are probably some tense meetings going on at the Dropbox offices today.
Drive works across a range of Google’s service including Gmail and Google+. Since Google started allowing automatic full-resolution photo uploads through Google+, that 15GB of free space isn’t going as far as it used to for a lot of folks. With the 1TB plan you could upload two pictures each day for 200 years and still have some left over. A 10TB plan would give you enough space to store about 1,000 1080p Blu-ray quality movies in thecloud.
You can sign up for the new plans starting today. Anyone who was already paying for Drive space will automatically be moved to the cheaper plan.
